April 2005 Volume 9 Number 4
Club Points Competition
This competition
is meant to be a friendly way to show your support for the Club’s activities
throughout the year and promote a more active overall club membership. We have a lot planned this year, including
a number of different events and many of our members will be racing
and participating in a number of DualSport events.
Trail work days will be needed through out the year at Coal Creek
and the more people that show up to help, the easier the work will be.
Plan to
be an active member and we look forward to seeing everyone whenever
they have a chance to come out and go riding and to help out with the
different planned Club events. Thank
you for your support!
The top five in points so far for this year

Fitness Tips…..Anthony Khiel
It’s that
time of year again, the temperatures are coming up and more people will
be riding after the long cold wet winter that we had.
As the temperature goes up, it puts more stress on the body as
you fly over the trails. One
thing to keep in mind is proper hydration.
I have noticed over the last few years that most folks riding
have started using the backpack style drinking systems.
These are the way the way to go for proper hydration. Start with your full and make sure it is empty when you get done
for the day.
Studies
have shown that an active adult needs to drink 8 ounces of water per
10 pounds of body weight per day. Put
the pencil to it….thats a lot of water
per day. Try drinking that much water in a day and you
will learn two things: one is
that it is hard to consume that much and two, if you do, you will feel
a lot better over the next few days.
Most adults live from day to day in at least a minimum of a dehydrated
state. This causes all sorts of stresses on the body, many of which
are joint related. A lot of these stresses can be relieved by
increasing the amount of water that you drink each day.
If you
are like, I don’t like drinking just water.
There are a wide range of sports drinks on the market from the
old standby Gatorade to some really high tech mixtures that can be pretty
expensive. One thing to keep in mind is that most all
of these come premixed way too strong for what you really need. It is best to cut these at least in half with
water before you fill your drink system with them.
Remember,
drink before you feel thirsty and make sure to empty your drink system
before you finish the ride. The
fluids won’t help you if they are still in the backpack.
Trail Work Days….Skip Davis
3/13 and 4/10 Work
Days
This year’s first official
work day was held on March 13th. We had a great turnout and
the weather was awesome. Some of the large water holes on Root Hog were drained. Fallen
trees were removed on Jagermeister and a reroute was opened up around
the wet slippery hill. Fallen trees were removed on Middle Ridge and
reroutes were added around some of the deeper ruts. Overall it was an
extremely productive day. Many thanks to all who participated!
The next workday was on April
10th. We had slightly less attendance, but we still accomplished
a lot. Most of the work was done on Middle Ridge. We removed some recently
fallen trees and some older ones that we didn’t get to on the March
workday. We took down the Middle Ridge Bridge because it seemed that
people were still trying to use it. After much thought, we decided against
a reroute and added rocks in the ditch to make it easier to pass. We
still need a plan for replacement of the bridge. Again, thanks for all
the hard work.
At
one of the stops, the discussion turned to the original cutting of the
trails that we were riding. Many thanks are owed to the members who
spent days, weeks and even months, laying out, cutting and clearing
the trails that we now enjoy so easily. We still have the responsibility
of maintenance, but this is a small price to pay for the quality network
of trail that we have access to. Club Events Calendar
April 30,
2005 will be the date for the lead ride for the visitors from Mid Tennessee
Dirt Riders. Wendell Cooper
is leading the ride and needs some Volunteer Riders to help out. The ride will loop through Root Hog, Jaegermister, Middle Ridge,
and down Tennessee Hollow back to Briceville.
This will be a great ride and we need to show our support and
show off our great trail system.
Contact
Wendell for details.
