June 2005 Volume 9 Number 6
Club Points Competition This competition
is meant to be a friendly way to show your support for the Club’s activities
throughout the year and promote a more active overall club membership. We have a lot planned this year, including
a number of different events and many of our members will be racing
and participating in a number of DualSport events.
Trail work days will be needed through out the year at Coal Creek
and the more people that show up to help, the easier the work will be. Plan to
be an active member and we look forward to seeing everyone whenever
they have a chance to come out and go riding and to help out with the
different planned Club events. Thank
you for your support! The top five in points so far for this year
are: Skip Davis
1650 Brian Strunk
1050 Anthony
Khiel 850 Steve Lewis 700 Wendell
Cooper and Jason Edwards 650 Fitness Tips….Anthony Khiel
As summer temperatures
start to rise, we will be riding more…hopefully.
With more riding, comes a variety of things we haven’t dealt
with since last year. One of
the more unpleasant ones is a bad case of MONKEY
BUTT! Everyone jokes about it….until they experience
it. In technical terms, Monkey
Butt is a bacterial skin infection that is caused by heat, friction,
and moisture abrading the skin. Fortunately,
it is pretty easy to avoid if you take some precautions.
First and foremost
is to wear a good quality pair of cycling shorts with a chamois under
your riding pants and keep those shorts clean.
If you are going on a multi-day ride, have at least two pairs
of cycling shorts. That way
you can wash one and wear a clean dry pair. If you can, let the shorts
dry in the sun with them turned inside out.
The sun is a great killer of bacteria.
Secondly, as soon as you can after riding for the day, change
out of your riding clothes and clean up good.
Put the bench racing on hold for a few minutes and clean up.
It will help in the long run.
This is the same for one day rides.
It is not a good idea to drive home in the clothes that you rode
in. Third, remember that dry is good. You will hear all kinds of stories about using
vasoline….get you minds out of the gutter. This is the worst thing you can do. The vasoline will trap bacteria next to your skin and keep it moist.
That is a bad combination. Dry is the key. Use talcum powder to keep
dry. Don’t use the baby
powder that is made from corn starch.
This is a food source for the bacteria.
If you are unfortunate
enough to develop a case of monkey butt, treatment is pretty simple. Keep the area clean. You may want to apply a good quality anti-bacterial
agent..like Neosporin. Otherwise,
try to keep the area as dry as possible and it will clear up in a few
days.
This is definitely
a case of “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
See you out there!
