Club Points Competition

This competition is meant to be a friendly way to show your support for the Club’s activities throughout the year and promote a more active overall club membership.  We have a lot planned this year, including a number of different events and many of our members will be racing and participating in a number of DualSport events.  Trail work days will be needed through out the year at Coal Creek and the more people that show up to help, the easier the work will be.

Plan to be an active member and we look forward to seeing everyone whenever they have a chance to come out and go riding and to help out with the different planned Club events.  Thank you for your support!

The top five in points so far for this year are:

Skip Davis 1000

Brian Strunk  600

Wendell Cooper 550

Anthony Khiel  550

Jason Edwards 450

Riding Tip….. Gary Clark

Hi all. Before I get started I want to say that I am not a pro rider by far. I don't really feel qualified to be giving a riding tip. But this tip did not come from me. It came from a fast B rider. I have been working on this tip and it really helps.

The tip is to sit forward on your seat with your head over the handlebars in the corners. When my friend told me of this I knew I wasn't doing it. A lot of times I am sitting kind of relaxed on the motorcycle with my torso more in the middle of the bike. I have to force myself to get my head over the bars and sit forward but what a difference it makes. Just what all this does I'm not sure. But it sure makes corning easier and faster.

Kids Ride….Russ Townsend

The Vol Rider Kids ride on April 17th went really well. The weather was
perfect, and the trail that was laid out for the kids seemed to have just
the right amount of challenge to keep it interesting, but not so hard that
they wanted to go home and play playstation. The ride started with 5 miles
of gravel and dirt road to warm up, and then a 5 mile loop through the
woods. For some of the kids this was their first real "Trail" ride, and they
all did great. In fact we made it a least 100' before the first one crashed,
but like a typical kid he got up and rode the rest of the day. Perhaps the
most impressive ride of the day was by Cody Houff on a KTM 50. He went
everywhere the bigger kids did, in spite of 10" tires!

After we made the first loop we came back to the parking lot for drinks and
snacks. Of course we adults did our best to introduce the kids to time
honored motorcycle traditions such as telling lies and making excuses about
our riding. After getting them hopped up on Little Debbie treats and soft
drinks we took off to do it again.

All total we had 6 "small" kids and a couple of "big" ones. Bikes included a
KTM 50, 2 TTR 90's, a TTR125,an XR 80 and an XR100. When they were all
going down the trail it looked like one of those Yamaha or Honda commercials.
The only difference was instead of Ricky Carmichael giving them tips we had
Wendell. By the end of the day we had ridden about 36 miles, and every kid
there was asking when we could do it again. That was probably the best
indicator of how good of a day we had. At the end of the day we had a
drawing for 4 $10 gift certificates, 2 of which were donated by Honda/Yamaha
of Knoxville. (Thank Scott Bayless the next time you see him)

The ride had been advertised at the local shops, plus through word of mouth.
Most of the people who came were not current Vol Rider members, but I think
they all are future Vol Rider members. Plus, there were at least 5 families
I know of that wanted to come but couldn't make it. This is something we
will definitely do again soon.

Fanny Pack Tools……Skip Davis

In perusing the mail order catalogs, I seem to have memorized all the usual offerings of MSR and Moose, but it is really fun and exciting to find a tool elsewhere that is a little different and maybe even a little better. While traversing the local Sears, Home Depot or Lowes, I like to keep an eye out for tools that are light, compact and look to be really useful on the trails in the event of mechanical trouble. I recently found two tools that seem to fit this description.

The first is a T-Handle Screwdriver. I found this one in Home Depot but Sears has one that is similar.

This piece is convertible from a T handle to a regular straight handle. The T handle gives the extra torque needed for some stubborn Phillips head screws. It stores bits in the top of the handle, and when coupled with a ¼” socket adapter makes a really handy T wrench or nut driver.

The next is a small ¼” ratchet that also doubles as an offset screwdriver. I also found this one at Home Depot.

I have used offset screwdrivers in the past as compact ratchets, but this feels and acts much more like a “real” ratchet. It comes with a ¼” socket drive that is held in place much better than some adapters I’ve used. This comes in handy when you are using a drive extension.

Both of these tools were less than $10 apiece, and fit into my fanny pack well.
